Coach / carriage bolts are most commonly used with large timber to timber or timber to metal application such as timber joist and decking. This is a heavy duty fixing and a much more secure option than standard timber nails and screws.

The head of the bolt has a shallow domed head with a square cup (shoulder) beneath the head. The shallow domed head has a larger circumference so that when tightening the nut on the other end the bolt head spreads the load and achieves better clamping resistance and the head will not pull through the hole. Use of a washer beneath the nut when tightening should be considered for better performance.
Plated and corrosion resistant Coach / Carriage Bolts
Depending on where you may want to use the coach / carriage bolt you may require a galvanised, zinc pated or exterior coated bolt. Galvanised and exterior coated are highly recommended for outdoor use as they have a much higher corrosion resistance. Zinc plated is ideal for indoor use or placed where there is less exposure to salts and high levels of moisture.
