What size and type of Drywall Screws do I need? Here’s our buyers guide to help choose the right Drywall Screws.

Thread Type: Should I use Coarse Thread or Fine Thread Drywall Screws?

Coarse Thread – For Timber Stud

Coarse threaded Drywall Screws are generally recommended for use with timber studwork. This is because of the deeper and wider threads which help cut into the timber quicker when drilling, get a better grip and gain higher pull-out resistance.

Fine Thread – For Metal Stud

Fine Thread Drywall Screws are recommended for Metal Studwork. The finer threads work better with metal studwork during application.

Do I need a Self-Drilling Drywall Screw?

Self-Drilling Drywall Screws are used on thicker gauge (2mm) metal studwork as they drill their own hole in the metal in order for the screw to penetrate into the stud quicker. Standard 25-degree sharp point type Drywall Screws can also be used on metal studs with a thickness up to 0.6mm.

What length Drywall screws should you use?

Fixing to Metal Stud:

When fixing to metal stud work its recommended that the screw should penetrate at least 10mm (10mm without the self-drilling point) into the metal. The thickness of the plasterboard, plus the stud and minimum 10mm screw penetration should be considered in order to choose the right size.

Fixing to Timber Stud:

When fixing Plasterboard to timber studwork its recommended that the screw should penetrate roughly 25mm or 1 Inch into the timber to get a good enough fixing. Thickness of the plasterboard should be considered in order to pick the right length of screws.

Collated Drywall Screws

Collated Drywall Screws are mostly used by tradesmen that often carryout drylining works. In order to use these screws a collated screw drill is required. Collated screws come attached on a strip that then fits onto a collated screw drill making it much faster and easier to apply the screws. All our Collated Screws have 50 per strip.

Phosphate or Zinc finish?

Plasterboard Screws come in two different finishes, Phosphate and Zinc. Phosphate offers a better corrosion resistance than Zinc and mostly used when fixing to timber stud. Zinc coated screws are mostly used when fixing to metal studwork as they are available with the self-drilling point that can be required to penetrate into metal.

All our Drywall Screws have a Bugle head type, Phillips drive type and majority have an A1 Fire Classification. More details can be found in product pages along with CE Declaration of Performance Certificates.
